- Troubleshooting:
-
- Both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 Users:
-
- CD-ROM:
-
- The program requires the Core Rules CD to be in the
- CD-ROM drive when running the program. If the CD is
- not in the CD-ROM drive when the program begins then
- the program will display a message and exit.
-
-
- Wizard Sound:
-
- The wizard's voice is generated by playing standard
- windows WAV files. Your system must be capable of
- playing WAV files either thru the system speaker
- or thru a Sound Card/Speakers.
-
-
- Playing the Intro Wizard a Second Time:
-
- The Intro Wizard is automatically played the first time
- you run the program. If you want to hear it again,
- open the menu in the upper left corner of the main
- screen by left clicking on it, then click on "Play
- Intro Wizard".
-
-
- Reinstalling the Program:
-
- If you ever decide to reinstall the program, we
- recommend you first uninstall any versions of the
- programs which are on your hard drive.
-
-
- Windows 3.1 Users:
-
- Out of Memory:
-
- The program requires a minimum of 8MB RAM with a 20MB
- virtual swap file. In general, a permanent swap file
- is faster than a temporary swap file.
-
- The most memory intensive part of the program is in
- the Generate New Character and Update/Enter Existing
- character modules. On a minimum system, the program
- will be getting low on memory by the time you reach
- the inventory screen.
-
- You can check on the amount of memory available by
- opening the Help/About menu in Program Manager. If
- it reports that the free memory is less than about
- 2MB or if free resources are less than 20% then you
- may experience problems.
-
- When you run out of memory, you will first begin to
- see that bitmaps are not being displayed properly and
- eventually you will receive "Out of Memory" messages.
-
- If you run out of memory, if possible, try the following:
-
- 1. If you are running SmartDrive, it may be setup
- to use a large portion of your system memory.
- Try either eliminating SmartDrive from your
- system by remarking it out of your Autoexec.bat
- and Config.sys file. Otherwise, try to reduce
- its size to 512K.
- 2. If any other programs are running, close them.
- 3. If the Help windows are open at the same time
- you are generating or updating a character then
- close those help windows.
- 4. If you are able to increase your virtual memory
- settings then try doing that.
- 5. If at all possible, install more RAM.
-
- To increase your virtual memory, open the "Control Panel",
- then open the "Enhanced 386" utility. Click on
- "Virtual Memory", and "Change". If possible make the
- type "Permanent", and the size to at least 23,000 KB.
-
- If it isn't possible to increase the size this big,
- your hard disk may be fragmented. You will need a disk
- defragmeting utility to defragment your hard drive.
- Then try setting your virtual memory again.
-
-
- Win32s Problems:
-
- If you had a version of Win32s installed on your PC before
- installing Core Rules, it may be an older version than the
- version on the Core Rules CD. The installation program should
- automatically install the Win32s if your system needs them.
-
-
- Display Resolution:
-
- The program needs a resolution of at least 800x600.
- If you have your display set to a lower resolution, Core Rules
- will instruct you when the program starts to increase the
- display resolution in the Windows Control Panel/Setup utility.
-
-
-
- Windows 95 Users:
-
- Installation:
-
- We recommend you run the installation program by selecting the
- Settings option from the Start Menu, selecting the Control
- Panel, and then selecting the Add/Remove Programs option. With
- the Core Rules CD in your CD ROM drive, select the Install
- button.
-
- Out of Memory:
-
- If your PC is low on disk space, Windows 95 may be unable to
- increase the virtual memory space. In general, unless you have
- specified your own virtual memory size in the System/Performance
- Virtual Memory settings dialog box, Windows 95 will keep expanding
- it's virtual memory swap file size until there is no more disk
- space free. If this happens, try to keep a minimum of 20MB of
- free disk space before starting the Core Rules program.
-
-
- Display Resolution:
-
- The program needs a resolution of at least 800x600.
- If you have your display set to a lower resolution, Core Rules
- will prompt you when the program starts to let it increase the
- resolution for the time the program is running. When the program
- exits it will then restore your display to it's previous resoulution.
